and Our philosophy is to create a class environment which is highly-productive and constructive whilst also being enjoyable and social. A friendly team spirit is extremely important. Each dancer should want their fellow dancers to achieve as much success and enjoyment as they aspire to and should be willing to help everyone from the youngest beginner to the seasoned champion. And most of all, amidst all the hard work, competition results & pressure, we want our dancers to remember to enjoy their dancing. Their love for Irish dancing is what got them involved & it’s what will ultimately make them better dancers. This passion will bring the results they’re working hard to achieve, it will build a comradery between mates working towards a common goal and their commitment will bring them great pride and memorable moments.
Read below for answers to some important questions ahead of attending your first class.
When are classes held?
Our class terms are run according to State school terms and invoices for class fees are charged per term and sent out at the start of each term. Classes are not held on public holidays or Easter, June/July, September & Christmas school holidays. Special workshops are held during the June/July and September school holidays for dancers competing at State and National Championships. Summer workshops are held in January each year. Please see the Class Times page for days, times and locations of our regular weekly classes.
What level class should I attend?
First-time dancers will start out in our ‘beginners’ level classes. If you have done Irish dancing before, please call to discuss this so we can decide on the class level that would be most appropriate for you.
Can parents sit in on classes?
Parents are asked to sit outside of all classes to avoid distracting students so we can achieve the most from each dancer. There is adequate seating outside each of the halls to accommodate those who wish to stay and wait for their children.
Our classes are also run according to COVID-Safe Industry protocols.
What should I wear to class?
Dancers are asked to come dressed in shorts and a T-shirt and to also bring a drink bottle of water to class.
Where can I see the dancers in action?
The Watkins Academy dancers perform regularly at competitions, community, cultural and professional events. Follow us on facebook or Instagram @watkinsirishdancers to find out where we’ll be next!
